Surfing on our weeklong courses certainly creates an appetite, so it’s important you’re refreshed and refueled to make the most of your experience with us. We’re lucky to be based in Newquay for our Cornwall surf breaks, a town with a buzzing cafe scene and unrivaled beach-side food hubs. With this in mind, we have collated a selection of our favourite brunch spots and destinations for the best baked goods in town.
Sea Spray Cafe
Sea Spray is an all time favourite located at our main surfing spot South Fistral. Watch the surf roll in as you refuel with a picking off Sea Spray’s all day brunch menu. The pancakes come highly recommended!
Best for: Sea Views, Pancakes, Brunch, Lunch
Location: Esplanade Road, South Fistral (Parking available on Esplanade Road)
Independently owned
Box & Barber
Head to B&B if you’re looking for a filling healthy breakfast option such as an Acai bowl or nutrient dense smoothies. With a light fresh interior it’s the perfect spot to unwind after a surf with a book or share brunch and stories with the rest of the surf tribe.
Best for: Sit in/Eat out Healthy Brunch and excellent hot drinks menu
Location: Fore Street, Newquay (near sainsbury’s)
Independently owned
Fore Street Cafe
We know that surfing is hungry work and sometimes nothing will suffice but a full English breakfast. Fore street offers a great breakfast experience (think modern British brunch not greasy spoon) with a range of veggie and vegan options to suit all preferences. The mushrooms on toast are insanely delicious if you’re stuck on options.
Best for: A filling and nutritious breakfast after an early morning surf.
Location: Fore Street, Newquay (near sainsburys)
Independently owned
Pavilion Bakery
For the early birds of the group, Pavilion is one of the cafes in town opening earlier (7:30am) so you can get your coffee fix before your surf. Situated in a former lifeboat house, you can load up on freshly filled sandwiches, Sri Lankan curries and a range of delectable pastries (we recommend the almond croissants). N.B. Best place for sourdough!
Best for: Early opening (7:30am), Delicious locally roasted coffee, bakery goods and sweet pastries
Location: Fore Street (like most of the other cafe spots!)
Small chain of bakeries
Jam Jar Cafe
Jam Jar was one of the first independent cafes in Newquay to start serving alternative milk coffees and GF cakes (all still baked by the owner Jess). Jam Jar has a cosy inside atmosphere or perfect for a takeaway if you want to wander down to the beach and munch with a sea view.
Best for: Gluten Free Cakes, Bagels and Wellbeing drinks
Location: Broad Street (Opposite Sainsburys)
Independently owned
NALU
One of the newer spots in town, located a stone’s throw from Great Western Beach is Nalu Coffee House. The menu encompasses health bowls, wraps and smoothies ensuring you get a nourishing meal as you immerse yourself in the plant filled and chilled atmosphere.
Best for: Healthy breakfast/lunch bowls of all varieties
Location: Morfa Hall Flats, Cliff Road, Newquay
Island
Located on the other side of town, we recommend dropping in for brunch at Island on your way back from surfing Watergate Bay or if you fancy a change of scene from Newquay’s Fistral end. Island has a strong coffee game complimented by a contemporary brunch menu, definitely one to visit on your stay in Newquay.
Best for: Modern Style Brunch, The Cake Selection
Location: Henver Road, Newquay (Parking available onsite)
Basket
Another one of our favourite locally owned independent cafes. Jade, the owner is a constant presence in Basket, baking all the cakes on offer and providing us with a diverse menu of breakfast options, sandwiches, salads and other delights. It’s a favourite with the locals and as you walk through the doors you’ll feel a friendly warming welcome.
Best for: Early opening (7am), Cakes and a large range of lunch options (including a salad counter)
Location: Tower Road, Newquay
Independently owned
Grounded Coffee Co + Gorse Bakery
Arguably the best coffee in town, Grounded coffee co. roasts it’s own speciality blends onsite served and provides coffee connoisseurs with a sense of comfort. They have two sites; one in town and the other at Prow Park industrial estate where they have teamed up with local legends Gorse Bakery, providers of some of the best bakery goods in town.
Best for: Coffee, Bakery (Dougnuts, Cruffins, Pastries, Sourdough)
Location: Prow Park Industrial Estate (Gorse + Grounded), Bank Street (Grounded in Town)
List guide may leave you spoilt for choice, but we wanted to celebrate the vast range of independent cafes in Newquay. Whether you’re GF, a smoothie bowl goddess or in need of a top notch coffee and pastry, there’s a vibe for everyone.
