YOUR COACHES
We draw from the longboard specialists on our coaching team to deliver our longboard focused courses. This 5 day longboard course is headed up by sponsored Longboarder and Surf Sistas Coach Beth Leighfield. Beth has been coaching with us for 4 years. She’s also a sponsored Longboarder, representing C-Skins Wetsuits, and has competed for the UK at the World Longboard Champs as well as surfing in prestigious invitational events such as the Mexi Log Fest, Smooth Movers and Gliding Barnacles. Beth has a fun and playful attitude to her coaching, making sessions fun and lighthearted. She also brings a wealth of technical knowledge to her coaching, so be ready with your most in depth questions, Beth has the answers!
Alongside Beth, Sophie is a full time surf coach at Surf Sistas, with seven years coaching experience. She coaches all ability levels and like Beth is a sponsored longboarder, regularly competing in national competitions and invitationals. Sophie is also a keen geologist, so whilst out in the water expect to find out more about the local landscape! Her scientific mind gives her sound technical knowledge and she nerds out on the science of longboard technique, boards and fins. Sophie is our go to for advice on buying a longboard or what fin setup is best!
I’ve had boatloads of longboard coaching in my time, but I wanted to let you know that this weekend was up there as among the very very best. Sophie and Amelia not only know their onions, they are super articulate, generous, energetic, organised and professional. And Kirsty is a straight-up rockstar, getting the great angles and never taking her eye off the ball. It was soooo inspiring to get time in the water with these three. You’ve definitely got a winning formula, and I am so grateful to be a beneficiary of that.

COURSE FOCUS & WHAT TO EXPECT:
Throughout the week our primary focus will be helping you to learn and finesse longboard specific techniques. This includes handling your longboard and getting to the back line with a bigger board efficiently, understanding different waves and the different wave sections required for specific manoeuvres moving on the board, cross-stepping
We aim to include 2 in-water sessions with your coaches and a theory session each day. Our photographer/videographer will be on hand through the week to capture your progress for photo/video analysis and also for you to take home some images of you styling on your longboard.
With our usual high instructor to student ratio, 3 Surf Sistas longboard coaches for up to 8 participants, you can expect plenty of 1:1 attention to make real progress with your longboarding.
Following introductions our first water session will be all about finding out what level you are at and setting individual goals for the week. We will then tailor your tuition for the next 5 days around these goals.
Expect to cover all aspects of longboarding:
- How to handle and paddle out a longboard
- Longboard etiquette
- Methods of takeoff on a longboard
- Different ways to turn your longboard
- How to crosstep
- How to set up your board for a noseride
- Noseriding
We will be using video and photographs throughout the week to help you to improve your technique. You can download these images from an online gallery after the course.
One of our favourite parts of this course is the road trip. We will all check the forecasts together for that perfect spot, making good use of our instructors local knowledge! Then we strap the boards to the roof and all hit the road on a mini Cornish surf adventure!
